On this day: Sting retained the TNA World Title against Jeff Hardy in the main event of Victory Road in a shockingly quick match, one that lasted less than 90 seconds. Sting picked up the victory with the Scorpion Death Drop after lengthy stalling by Jeff Hardy, who wouldn’t appear on television again until August of that year due to personal issues. (3/13/11)

WCW Monday Nitro debuts on TNT; Lex Luger returns to WCW: September 4, 1995
The Monday Night Wars began in a mall in Minnesota. WCW Monday Nitro debuted on this day in history. The first major jump between the two wrestling promotions: Lex Luger.
- September 4th - The war has begun.
On September 4th, 1995 the Monday night wars officially started as WCW’s Monday Nitro hit the air waves, live from the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota, for the first time.
The one-hour broadcast featured Brian Pillman versus Jushin Liger, Ric Flair versus Sting, and WCW World Heavyweight Champion Hulk Hogan taking on Big Bubba Rogers. However, the biggest highlight was the return of Lex Luger to WCW after having spent the previous few years wrestling for the WWF, where he had been one of the promotion’s top stars. Luger’s appearance was particularly jarring because he had just wrestled a match for the WWF the previous evening; the match was his final contractual obligation with the company, and Luger signed with WCW the morning of his appearance. The event set the tone for Nitro’s “anything can happen” atmosphere.
